5.1. Methodological overview

The teaching methodology proposed in the subject of legal dentistry and bioethics to help the student achieve the intended learning outcomes is based on:

 

  • master class
  • practical classes
  • self study of student
  • tutorials

 

5.2. Learning tasks

Master Class

This teaching methodology within the subject Legal Dentistry and Bioethics is oriented to place the student in each of the topics that make up matter. It allows to present each topic from a global perspective, placing it in the field of matter. This facilitates the integration of its content with the content of other subjects.

The aim of this method within the Legal and Bioethics Dentistry is to provide information tailored to the level of the student. Through the realization of each of the themes of the selection of the most important aspects for the student. This aims to facilitate understanding of the main concepts of the subject.

To facilitate the presentation of the topics power-point presentations are used. Moreover, such presentations the student is provided for further study.

Another of the objectives pursued with the main class  is to promote student participation in class, interspersing questions during exposure or comments on newspaper articles, radio news and television news  to show interest partner of the topics covere.

The master class is sufficient to cover only the targets for the transmission of knowledge and understanding, not being able to reach the analysis and application of acquired knowledge. To achieve these objectives are used in the course of Legal Dentistry and Bioethics Seminars and independent work of the student.

 

Practical classes

This method of teaching is essential in a discipline such as Bioethics Dentistry legal and whose knowledge and preparation are achieved when they are able to understand and resolve individual cases using general concepts observed in the conference.

Its main purpose is to teach the student to reason with the criteria and seen in lectures contents, apply those acquired knowledge, thus contributing to their settlement.

 

Autonomous student work

Elaboration of two works, one of them will develop a theme of the program content of the subject proposed by the teacher to be presented in class by the student

 

Tutorials

They aim to resolve any doubts that may have the student during the study of the subject, as well as orient and guide the student conducting case studies and documents to be made.

5.3. Syllabus

The content of the theoretical program of Legal Dentistry and Bioethics course is structured in four thematic blocks, comprising a total of 17 subjects.


The Block I of the course deals with general concepts that are essential to the correct understanding of other subjects.

The topics included in this block are:
1.Presentation and Introduction to Legal Dentistry and Bioethics. Concept and content
2. Introduction to Law for dentists. Standard legal concepts, Law, Royal Decrees, civil law, criminal law. The civil and criminal proceedings. Organization of the Judiciary
3. Introduction to Ethics Bioethics. Bioethics principles of professional ethics in Dentistry
 
Block II allows students to know and understand the legal framework in which to develop its professional practice and is the centerpiece of the subject
The topics included in this block are:
4. Requirements for the legal exercise of Dentistry. Professional intrusiveness. Professions dentistry, dental professions
5. The odonto act. Concept and classes. Dentist-patient relationship. Legal nature. The practice of dentistry in various forms
6. Professional associations
7. Professional Responsibility in Dentistry. legal bases. constituent elements. Main circumstances and problems arising from the demand for accountability
8. Patient Rights I. Patient Autonomy and Informed Consent. Spanish legislation on informed consent in the field of healthcare
9. Patient Rights II Professional secrecy. Current regulation: legal rules

10. Medico-legal documents of interest in dentistry. Part. Certificate. Clinic history. Recipe.
11.The expert test in Dentistry. Concept. Method and objectives. legal regulation. Rights and Duties of the expert. The expert report.
 
Block III aims to inform students of dentistry as a health professional those classic subjects under study of bioethics. Not only from an ethical perspective but also from a legal perspective.
The topics included in this block are:
12.Ethical life at the beginning of Assisted Reproduction Techniques I. Issues. legal regulations.
13.Ethical issue at the beginning of life II issues. Termination of pregnancy. Legal regulations
14. Ethical end of life issues. The terminally ill patient and palliative care. The right to a dignified death. Euthanasia. Legal regulations
15. Ethical issues of organ and tissue transplants. Legal regulations
16.Ethics Research with human beings. Ethics committees Clinical Research. Legal regulations
 
Block IV presents the student with a new dimension of his activity as a dentist, forensic dentistry. This is a subject that exceeds the actual content of the Law and Bioethics Dental subject; but it is considered important that the student can know and approach this branch of dentistry that has a lot to do with the Legal Dentistry; because they may not have another opportunity to do so throughout their university education.
This block is formed by a single theme:
17. Introduction to Forensic Odontology. Importance in Human Identification. Principal methods of identification Odontológica
 
Practical program content
Some of the cases that will work in practical classes are:
Cases to be applied so-called principles of bioethics.
Cases on professional intrusion in Dentistry
Cases on professional liability in dentistry
Cases on the Rights of Patients
Cases on medical-legal documents

 

5.4. Course planning and calendar

Schedule sessions and presentation of works

The timing of the various activities will be developed according to the academic calendar and schedule established by the center.
Practical work must be submitted at the end of the semester
